Artisans and Designers Push the Limits with Lucite Embedment Designs
Lucite has been widely used since the early 1900’s to create furniture and jewelry. In the 1930’s, beautiful furniture was produced and many pieces could be found in the homes of the rich and famous. In fact, Claudette Colbert’s 1934 Oscar for It Happened One Night was proudly displayed on a Lucite table in her home. Throughout the decades, Lucite has been used by artisans and decorators to produce one-of-a-kind pieces that clients crave.
Lucite is an ideal medium for artists. It is strong and impact-resistant. Its physical state allows craftspeople to cut and manipulate the material to create unique shapes and effects. In addition, these properties also allow for unbelievable flexibility like embedding items within the medium itself, which is allows for ultimate creative freedom for artists and designers. Finally, it is very light, weighing about ½ the weight of glass. You can find out more about the properties of Lucite and how we work with it by reading What is the difference between glass awards and lucite awards? or watching our video about Lucite manufacturing.
Clearmount has worked with these artistic and insightful creators. It is a fun part of what we do! We are able to assist in taking an artisan or designer’s idea and make it a reality. We become the production partner they are looking for to transform their creativity into a tangible piece so that others can share in the fruits of their creative process.
Some may think that we are simply an awards, POP and plaque manufacturer; the truth is that we are so much more than that. Over the years, we have worked with many artists to help them build their art. It allows us to use our creativity and ingenuity in finding ways to produce a client’s art in a manner that allows them to have concrete pieces to work with so that they can then market to the world they work in.
Custom Interior Design Pieces Become Art with the Use of Lucite
Over the years, we have created an eclectic assortment of unique interior design pieces made with Lucite:
stair railings for a custom home
bath stools
Muskoka chairs
footstools
custom table tops with both Lucite embedment and lighting
intricate back drops
On one occasion, a designer of a custom bathroom wanted bathroom cabinets to have see-through legs; so we created solid, custom legs for the beautiful cabinetry.
Artisans Use Lucite to Make Unique Custom Jewelry and Art
Artisans have worked with us to create custom-designed:
jewelry
art pieces
custom plinths (a pedestal / stand) for artwork
We have a customer who is a wonderful antique dealer who scours the markets for vintage Lucite furniture or décor pieces and will then bring them to us to be fixed, rebuffed, glued and generally looked after with tender care. These pieces always fascinate us as we get to look at the workmanship of Lucite makers from days past.
Canadian-Made is a Selling Feature for Designers’ Clients
Recently, we have been working with two very creative designers who are also artisans. They come to our production plant and follow the process closely, sometimes even trying their hand at embedding a few pieces. They placed great value on working with a Canadian manufacturer.
When I asked them why they were interested in working with a Canadian/North American manufacturer, for them the answer was simple:
“We were only ever hoping to endeavor on this business if we could find Canadian manufacturing. Neither of us was interested in manufacturing outside of Canada and it was just a funny coincidence that you happen to be in my neighborhood. Some of the major benefits to working with local manufacturers are quality control, convenience, but most importantly the relationships that we get to foster with people like you, David, Kate. Positive business relationships are incredibly important to us! In addition, for us, it’s a huge selling feature that we are able to promote our goods and products as Canadian-made. From our point of view, it adds value to our product being high quality and high-end.”

Having worked with artisans and designers from New York and further afield, we truly enjoy working with wonderfully creative people to help them create art and design that is truly one-on-a-kind.
