Western Canadian Music Awards Case Study
How to recognize the talent around us with new creative ways
Every year, the Breakout Music Festival organized by the Western Canadian Music Awards, celebrates every year the artistic and music talent in western Canada. Usually, the event is hosted in a different Western Canadian city each year. Like most events, due to COVID-19, this year's edition was a little different. The 2020 Home Edition Festival went virtual and the organization created a unique online experience that included several musical performances.
The WCMA engaged us to bring their concept for the 2020 awards to creation. The client wanted the awards to look like a CD case. Remember those? We loved the idea! Nevertheless, we knew our awards couldn't be a simple replica of a standard CD jewel case.
We created the square shape of the case with wood, left it in its natural colour and in the middle, we left a space for the “CD”. Our artisans used Lucite to make the "CD" by colour tinting its silhouette in the colour purple. For the info strip of the "CD", once again, we used wood but painted in black. We proceeded to print the client’s logo, category and respective recipient of the 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards in white. Mixing these two materials, Lucite and wood, was the perfect balance to give this CD case a contemporary look.
The result was a great conversation piece that the recipients will be proud to display and share online. In these pictures, you can see Trevor Sinclair, president of Music NWT, dropping off the award in person to the WCMA Classical Composer of the Year award Carmen Braden at a safe social distance.
